IELS MALTA - COMPANY PROFILE
The Institute of English Language Studies (IELS), is a large all year round organisation teaching English as a foreign language. IELS was established as a joint venture in 1985 between LAL Sprachreisen (Language and Leisure) of Munich, Germany, a fully owned subsidiary of Frosch Touristik International GmbH (FTI), and Festa Ltd of Blata L-Bajda, a fully owned subsidiary of Mizzi Organisation.
LAL Sprachreisen started sending students to Malta and Festa realised that Malta was an ideal place to bring students on learning holidays. IELS was then formed in 1985, with some 10 classrooms in Parisio Street, Gzira, which eventually was converted to a summer school for Teenagers when we moved into a new school premises in Mattew Pulis, Sliema in 1992. The purpose built premises is air-conditioned throughout, has bright, modern classrooms, a cafeteria, a bookshop, self-study centre and an internet café with free WiFi access. The school in Gzira has undergone a major refurbishment programme and has been renovated to create a dedicated learning environment for teenagers. The centre comprises an open-plan student lounge with a reception area, modern administration offices, 60 bright and airy classrooms, and a large internal courtyard. In 1999 we opened a new school in Xlendi, Gozo and in 2004 we have moved to a brand new small school in Ghajnsielem, where we have 10 bright and airy classrooms, a video room, administration office, a reception area with vending machines and residential accommodation on the top floors.
IELS has developed into an international EFL operation with an excellent reputation and teachesaround 10,000 students every year at its 3 schools in Malta and Gozo.

We are providers of high quality language courses at all levels for people from a variety of backgrounds. We offer small class sizes and continually assess individual needs and progress to ensure that each of our students achieves maximum benefit.

TEACHING AND METHODOLOGY
Our students want to be able to use English both accurately and fluently. Our methodology combines the best of traditional language teaching and the latest effective developments in teaching techniques. Students learn relevant language, which they can put to immediate practical use.
We teach the four fundamental language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), with emphasis given according to the students’ needs. Carefully selected and individual fluency activities, such as role-plays, allow students to improve their pronunciation and speak with confidence in a wide variety of situation.
We also encourage students to develop effective learning strategies, which enable them to continue learning outside the classroom. We offer students the opportunity to discuss their progress with their teachers regularly, and all students are encouraged to do appropriate homework on a daily basis to improve their language.
OUR LESSONS
The teachers will use a combination of class activities and course materials to ensure that the students get the most effective practice of the four skills of speaking, reading, writing and listening. Role-play activities and language development games will be used to build the students’ communicative competence and build confidence.
We have a wide range of well-known EFL course-books at our disposal, and we have a comprehensive resources centre from which our teachers can supplement other materials; we recommend that students bring a dictionary.
The school excursions also provide the students with the opportunity to use their newly acquired language skills with their fellow classmates in a more informal situation. Students can receive individual tutorials with their teacher in which they are able to discuss their progress and ways in which they can continue to make improvements in the future. We give all students a certificate of attendance at the end of their course. A variety of EFL books, dictionaries and cassettes are also on sale at the school.
OUR CLASSES
We place importance on the students’ learning environment and therefore keep our class sizes small and attempt to have an appropriate balance of nationalities in each class.
First two lessons: On arrival at the school on their first day, the students will be assessed to determine their grammatical knowledge and fluency of spoken English. They will then be placed into classes with students of a similar aptitude.
Second two lessons: Either further communicative practice in using the language they have learnt in the previous lessons, or related topic-based practice in the four skills. If the student has booked an Intensive English course, a Focus Course, a Minigroup or a Plus Course, their afternoon classes will place special emphasis on oral communication. Any private lessons provide an opportunity for the student to look at themes connected to their occupational, academic and personal interests
OUR TEACHERS
IELS only employ teachers with a recognised teaching qualification such as Cambridge ESOL Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) or Trinity Certificate in teaching English to speakers of other languages (CertTESOL).
Many of our teachers also possess the Cambridge ESOL Diploma (DELTA) or Trinity Diploma, the DELTA and some a Masters degree in EFL or Applied Linguistics, while others have a post-graduate certificate in education (PGCE).
All new teachers are observed in the first few weeks of their employment to ensure a high standard of teaching.
TEACHER TRAINING
We run approximately 6 TEFL courses a year, during the first few months and the last few months of the year. The main objective for running these courses is to recruit our own teachers. This way we are aware of what training they have had and will also have a clear idea of their personality, strengths and weaknesses and reliability.
The training we give is mainly hands on and is based on the communicative approach. The 60-hour course is run by fully qualified teacher trainers and covers both language analysis and teaching methodology.
We cover the basic language points, such as the tense system as well as presenting lessons in the four skills (listening, reading, speaking and writing), classroom techniques, class management and lesson planning. There are peer teaching presentations during the course and trainees are required to give a 60 minute lesson to real students at the end of the course.
As well as the teaching practice, trainees need to complete an assignment including grammar, language and methodology and prepare a detailed lesson plan in order to successfully obtain the certificate.
In House Training: In-house workshops are held 3 or 4 times a year. These cover various topics and are aimed at keeping teachers updated with various ideas for presenting language and carrying out activities in class. We also invite teachers who have anything to share to hold workshops themselves.The local EFL teachers’ association also holds 3 workshops a year at the school which many of our teachers attend.

At all IELS schools, we pride ourselves in offering good quality and competitively priced accommodation. You can choose between the warmth and hospitality of a Maltese host family or to stay at one of our residences.

HOME STAY: If you wish to experience the Maltese hospitality then we recommend you stay in a private home. Most of our host families live in Sliema and the neighbouring districts of St. Julians, San Gwann, Gzira, Ta’ Xbiex and Msida. The maximum travelling time is 30 minutes by bus. Our home stays can be a family with children, a childless couple, a single parent or a single person.
STUDENT RESIDENCES
DAYS INN RESIDENCE, 3*** SUPERIOR: This residence is within walking distance of the IELS adult centre. The Days Inn Residence, which runs under our own management, consists of 55 studio apartments and 45 hotel rooms.
Each studio apartment has:
A pull down bed and a single bed which can also be used as a settee
A desk which can also be used as a dressing time and a side table with reading lamp
A wardrobe
A luggage rack with 2 drawers and a coat hanger
A shoe rack
Kitchenette including a cooker, an oven, refrigerator, a sink bowl, a toaster and various crockery and cutlery.
The residence offers various amenities such as a 24-hour reception service, 2 lifts, a common room, a lounge bar and a small rooftop swimming pool with sun terrace. Complimentary Wi-Fi service is available in the reception area for students to stay in touch with their family and friends.
Dine Around' Card: IELS students can now save and enjoy the full dining experience in Malta by purchasing these convenient Dine Around cards at the reception of our Main Adult school in Sliema and at the Days Inn Residence.
IL-MERILL RESIDENCE AND APART HOTEL, 3*** STANDARD: Il-Merill is located next to the main school in Sliema. There are several well furnished apartments, with one or two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchenette and a combined dining and lounge room. There are also one-bedroom apartments and hotel rooms with twin beds and private facilities for students traveling together. At il-Merill once can also find a splash pool on the roof-top terrace with magnificent views over the harbour and of Valletta.
ALBORADA STUDIOS, 2** (ECONOMY): This option is suitable for budget-minded students who wish to enjoy a one-bedroom studio apartment with kitchenette facilities and live only a few minutes away from the school. Sharing facilities are also available.
MERCURY STUDENT RESIDENCE: Located in a quiet area of Sliema and just 20 minutes walk from the school. There are 16 nicely furnished apartments, some with one bedroom, some with 2 and some with 3 bedrooms. The apartments are comfortably furnished,with a fully equipped kitchenette (with electric 4 burner top and oven), dining area and private bathroom.
Each apartment is equipped with a safety deposit box. Most apartments have a balcony or terrace. There is also a self-service laundry room with washing machines and tumble dryers (a nominal charge applies). The Residence is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. You will be living in a typical town street of Sliema, with hospitable and friendly neighbors. The local grocery store, pharmacy and butcher are just a few meters away.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATION
Additionally students can choose from a wide selection of competitively priced hotels accustomed to meeting the needs of adult language students.

SLIEMA CHALET HOTEL, 3 ***: The recently refurbished Sliema Chalet hotel is located on the popular Sliema seafront promenade, and only 5 minutes walk from our school in Mattew Pulis Street and the shopping centre, bars and restaurants in Sliema. The popular rocky beach along the promenade is just across the road from the hotel. There are 65 bedrooms and the hotel is considered amongst the best of the 3 star category in Sliema as it excels in providing and excellent personalised service to its customers. All bedrooms have en-suite facilities, air-conditioning, radio and telephone. Bedrooms with a sea-view are available at a supplement. There is a nice restaurant and a popular café overlooking the promenade as well as a sun-terrace on the roof.
DIPLOMAT HOTEL, 4 ****: Situated along the popular Sliema promenade the hotel's facilities include a rooftop swimming pool, sun terrace and bar overlooking the sea, a health centre including sauna, games room and a business centre. The Lobby bar serves light hot and cold snacks and the restaurant offers an extensive hot and cold buffet breakfast and a buffet/carvery dinner. The hotel is fully air-conditioned throughout and all bedrooms have a side-seaview or a full seaview, private facilities including a hair-dryer, direct dial telephone, satellite TV, radio, safe, trouser press and mini bar. The popular rocky beach, ideal for swimming and sunbathing is just across the road from the hotel. The town's shopping centre, bars and restaurants are 10 minutes walk along the promenade. The hotel is 15 minutes walk from our school in Mattew Pulis Street and buses to main locations and the capital city, Valletta, stop in front of the hotel.
WATERFRONT HOTEL, 4 ****: Situated in a prime location along the Sliema seafront promenade, this hotel was built and developed to the highest standards of comfort, safety and hygiene. Its location provides spectacular views of the harbour in front and of the famous fortifications of Malta's historic capital city - Valletta. It is within a short walk of the centre of Malta's most popular resort - Sliema, and close to the nearby shops, restaurants and bars. It is only 10 minutes walk from our school in Mattew Pulis Street. IELS – ACCOMMODATION GOZO
Gozo is an ideal place to relax and enjoy outdoor life whilst studying at the same time. Students are offered three types of accommodation to choose from - host family, student residence and hotel. A host family stay offers a great opportunity to continue to practice your English outside normal school hours. Student residence accommodation allows you to mix with other students of different nationalities which is a great way to learn about other cultures. Then of course there is hotel accommodation for those of you who wish to be pampered.
HOME STAY
If you wish to experience the Gozitan way of life, then why not choose to stay with a host family. People in Gozo are very hospitable and friendly, and this offers the opportunity to learn English as well as learn about Gozitan culture.
MIGIARRO RESIDENCE
The Migiarro Residence is situated above the school and offers very comfortable accommodation in three self-catering apartments fully furnished to high standards. Each apartment has three twin bedrooms each with private balcony, a shower room, bathroom, fully fitted kitchen and a spacious living area. Students can choose to share a room with another student or have a single room at a supplement. The penthouse on the top floor has just two twin bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, fully-fitted kitchen and a private terrace area.
GRAND HOTEL
The Grand Hotel is ideally situated overlooking the fishing village of Mġarr with its colourful harbour and verdant valley, 10 minutes away from our school. The hotel enjoys panoramic views of Comino and Malta across the Gozo channel. All guest rooms are well furnished with air-conditioning and an-suite bathroom.
IELS – YOUNG LEARNERS – ACCOMMODATION
IELS has more than 20 years experience of looking after young language students abroad. Our friendly, dedicated teams are committed to providing younger learners with an experience they will never forget. We support and care for our young learners from the moment they enrol to checking them in at the airport on the way home. With a full activity programme there is lots to do for everyone! Enjoy the summer sun and our clear blue Mediterranean sea, sandy and rocky beaches, visit places of interest and mingle with other students and the locals!
HOME STAY - YOUNG LEARNERS – ACCOMMODATION
Staying in a Maltese host family is the ideal way of getting to know the Maltese way of life as well as to practice English with your hosts. Our host families are carefully selected by our accommodation department to provide you with the most comfortable and safest home according to your needs in Sliema and its neighbouring districts. Families outside these are areas are also recruited in the peak period and transport will be provided free of charge to/from the school as well as to join in the activities. Accommodation comprises sharing rooms on full board basis (breakfast, dinner packed lunch).
IL-MERILL RESIDENCE - YOUNG LEARNERS – ACCOMMODATION
Il-Merill is located next to the main adult school and 10 minutes away from our Young Learners’ Centre. Due to its proximity, it is an ideal accommodation option for Young Learners. Our teenagers are accommodated in 4-bedded apartments with en suite bathroom and a small kitchenette. Facilities at the il-Merill Residence also include a 24-hour reception service, TV corner, 2 lifts and a breakfast room. Young learners are provided with a packed lunch each day and dinner is provided at a nearby hotel. There is also a small splash pool on the rooftop terrace with magnificent views over the harbour and of Valletta.
HOTEL ACCOMMODATION - YOUNG LEARNERS – ACCOMMODATION
The St Pauls Bay Hotel has been selected as our main hotel for the Young Learners Programme. Located in the seaside town of Bugibba, the St. Pauls Bay Hotel is just 40 minutes from Malta International Airport and literally minutes away from the rock beach and the main square of Bugibba – a lively and attractive town that is a mecca of restaurants, bars and shops.
There are over 200 bedrooms which are large (mostly with three beds), comfortably furnished and fully air-conditioned. Hotel The hotel also boats a large and relaxing indoor pool incorporating a Jacuzzi, a games room offering the latest arcade games and a pool table. The main pool areas are located within a large open air central courtyard within the hotel grounds. Also during the summer months, La Terrazza Pool Bar serves a tasty selection of light snacks, ice creams and beverages. Breakfast and dinner will be provided at the main restaurant of the hotel and a packed lunch will provided at the school. Transport to the school is included and provided from St Paul’s Bay to Sliema every day.
